Smart Kalasatama is developed flexibly and through piloting, in close co-operation with 200 + stakeholders including residents, companies, city officials and researchers. Smart Kalasatama Kalasatama, a former harbour of the Port of Helsinki, is under re-development and construction into a new kind of smart city for 20,000 people. Kalasatama is a model district for Helsinki’s climate goals. Important themes are sustainable development, energy and utilization of waste. Kalasatama is the new area in Helsinki where new kinds of smart city functions are being tested under the umbrella of the Smart Kalasatama project. The city and companies are bringing their own experiments to Kalasatama in order to develop them in cooperation with the residents.

Kalasatama, a city on the outskirts of Helsinki, has been getting international attention – from Le Monde in France to CNN in the United States – as a “smart city” model. It is considered a living experiment meant to apply innovation to help achieve Finland’s vision of a carbon-neutral greater Helsinki by 2035 .
